Job Summary:

Performs required analytical testing of organic and inorganic samples. Interprets analytical data. Writes test reports. Typical work duties may involve polymer identification and characterization, unknown material identification, alloy identification, heavy metal content determination, sample digestion, and/or report writing. Analytical instruments used may include FTIR, ICP-MS, ICP-OES, EDS, XRF, TGA, DSC and/or SEM.

 

May be assigned special projects and perform the most difficult and complex chemical analyses or serve as technical experts. May provide technical guidance to lower-level Chemists. 

    Essential Job Functions include the following. Other duties may be assigned. 

     

    • Perform routine preparation of samples, used for testing analysis
    • Analyzes organic and inorganic substances to determine chemical and physical properties using various methods and instruments including, FTIR, ICP-OES, EDS, TGA, DSC, ICP-MS and XRF
    • Analyze results of testing to identify concerns or issues and discuss with supervisor as needed
    • Perform troubleshooting
    • Validate preparation of various forms of samples, and train analysts on validated prep
    • Report and document results following established procedures
    • Provides technical support at an experienced level to lab technologists
    • Ability to perform routine instrument maintenance and troubleshoot issues
    • Acts as both mentor and trainer to fellow laboratory technicians
    • Provide root cause analysis and corrective action for Out of Specification Results
    • Complete all required compliance documentation (lab notebook, instrument logs, etc.) 
    • Performs analysis of the most difficult and complex sample matrices that require the application of advanced computer-based instrumental procedures used to identify and quantify complex chemical compounds
    • Coordinates and oversees the work of and provides technical assistance to lower-level Chemists who are assisting in performing high priority time sensitive analyses or complicated special projects
    • Prepares interpretive reports to document the analytical method used, instrumental parameters, method modifications, relevant calculations, analytical findings or audit results
    • Maintains laboratory instruments and scientific equipment in accordance with manufacturer's specifications to ensure the accuracy of test results and safe operation of equipment
    • Adheres to quality control and quality assurance protocols to ensure the integrity of test results and safety of the work environment
    • Keeps abreast of changes and advancements in laboratory science and participates in continuing education to enhance knowledge and skills
    • Testifies in court regarding samples analyzed to attest to the chain of custody being maintained, test methods used, test results and conclusions reached
    • Performs other related duties.

Job Requirements

  • Polymer Characterization Experience
  • Bachelors degree in chemical sciences (minimally) or related field from an accredited college or university 
  • Plans, schedules, and arranges own and others activities in accomplishing objectives. 
  • Able to perform calculations necessary for sample preparation 
  • Demonstrated strong communication skills, both verbal and written 
  • Competent, with high quality standards, versatile and adaptable to work environment requirements 
  • Highly efficient, accustomed to problem solving and multitasking in a deadline-driven environment 
  • Assist with establishing & maintaining safe work standards in Lab 
  • Capable to complete projects independently, but work in a team environment 
  • Assumes responsibility for the accuracy and timeliness of the completed work 
  • Quick learner who is willing to learn and improve on the job 
  • Must have a positive attitude, be self-motivating and dependable 
  • Typically assigned difficult, demanding or complex tasks, which may require independent action and a high degree of initiative. 
  • Complete understanding and application of principles, concepts, practices, and standards, including GMP/ISO standards 
  • Training and auditing of personnel on departmental Work Instructions, test methods and Standard Operating Procedures. 

Work Experience 

2-4 years within lab environment performing similar tasks listed in “Job Function” section

Working Conditions 

Frequently requires the use of potentially hazardous chemicals and reagents 

Physical Abilities 

- Requires close visual acuity to perform activities such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer monitor/terminal; visual inspection involving small details; using measurement devices 
- Requires frequent talking, hearing, using fingers to manipulate an object.
